I mean, most of Shakespeare’s plays, both tragedies and comedies, would have folded up in five minutes if mobile phones had been invented back then. There is little explanation for the motives behind the characters’ actions when things turn serious. But Ranveer Singh’s expressions are right out of a saas-bahu serial, and it’s all Deepika can do to gyrate and sulk. What exactly was the plan? When did this fling turn into a grand romance? A shallow storyline can occasionally be bolstered by good actors. When the two meet, Leela is to be engaged to a wimpy architect whom her domineering mother Baa (Supriya Pathak Kapur) has chosen for the post of ghar jamaai. Thanks to the obvious chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, the heady lust that drives these two is believable.īut, we don’t quite get how and where that tumbles into love. I do like that the film’s heroine is a woman of unbridled passion, who makes the first move, calling Ram’s bluff when he tries to tease her.

Let’s look at this entirely as a love story that requires us to suspend our disbelief. I like that the film’s heroine is a woman of unbridled passion who makes the first move, calling Ram’s bluff when he tries to tease her Forget that Ram (Ranveer Singh) gathers a horde of supporting dancers for his intro-song, the signature move of which involves all of them simultaneously scratching their hair, while a gunfight is on in the neighbouring streets. Forget that the towns seem to be populated only by dons, henchmen and spouses, but someone contrives to bring out a local newspaper called Ranjhar Times. Forget that people kill each other all the time, and get away without the press ever finding out, and the authorities ever following up.

This is one of two warring villages in Gujarat, where policemen who have been bribed to raid one clan by the other can be bribed to stop the raid with pornographic film DVDs. Ram Leela opens to a man speaking on his mobile phone, and telling someone that he has walked into a town where guns are sold in an open market. The reason the film leaves us cold is that, in the middle of all the posturing and the pirouetting, Bhansali forgets to supply the audience with a story. And a smorgasbord of sounds and colours that wage regular assaults on our senses was only to be expected from a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. Melodrama, though, was only to be expected from Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (as the film was renamed after protests from Hindutva groups against its original title Ram Leela). On the heels of Issaq and Ishaqzaade comes a film that could make Shakespeare wrinkle his nose and say, “Okay, so this is a tad melodramatic”.
